Traveling? Prepare, Organize and Enjoy!
Traveling anytime can be hectic, but with a few travel tips and notes, you will have a trip to remember! Prepare, organize and enjoy!
To really enjoy yourself, ask yourself if all parties traveling with you are the right age and can enjoy where you are planning to go. For example if you are going on a hike, you probably would not want to bring your toddler. Use common sense when making decisions about who to take with you on your travels.
Packing, uuuggghhh packing! This doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. Make things easier on yourself by packing at night while the children are sleeping. Make a list of things, even simple things, so that you are sure not to leave anything behind. I personally choose to let my children pick out a couple things for their suit cases. Notice I said couple…J
Must haves for your purse or “grab it quick” spot…….
1. Sunscreen
2. Hand sanitizer
3. Snacks and bottled water
4. Blanket or change of clothes for cold or hot weather, kids are always opposite of what we plan for, right?!
5 .Umbrella or rain gear
And last, small carry bag of med’s for allergies, Benadryl sticks, fever or daily medicines and bug repellent.
Look for travel deals! Hotels, travel agencies, museums or any place you decide to visit may offer discounts for children, children under a certain age, group discounts, family discounts, bundle packages, church discounts or active police, fireman, ems, teacher discounts (if any of these apply to you or someone accompanying you)…..ask, ask, ask…as my grandmother always says “it never hurts to ask.”
Who says you can’t find deals! I just recently planned a beach trip for my father who wanted the whole family to go. I called, emailed and tried realtors and several owner rental websites. In my situation, my family could only go for 4 nights because we have a family member who could only go for four nights not a whole week. The realtors could only rent weekly. I could call on Mondays to check what was available for the week that did not rent. Well, that was sort of short notice for all parties, so I found an owner who would plan a four night rental on vrbo.com, and reserved an Oceanside house for the fraction of a hotel for one night. Shop, shop, shop!
Don’t lose anyone! Develop a buddy system; decide before you start moving who is in charge of who, especially if in a large group or if you have little ones. Let older children help take care of the little ones and keep all the children in front of you where adult eyes can see them.
Traveling? Let’s see, plane or vehicle?
If traveling by vehicle and you have a long way to go and can plan in advance, break your trip up by stopping at some fun to see places along the way. Search the areas you will be traveling through and look for something fun and possibly free to do. Just search “free things to do in ___”. There are so many free things still out there, such as museums, inexpensive kiddie parks, picnic at a park instead of eating at a restaurant. You and your kids will benefit from having a break. Let them get some of their energy out and you won’t feel like you are going crazy! If you are planning long distance traveling, weigh your options for plane and gas cost, also your sanity. There are travel packages and deals out there!
Don’t lose your cool! If you are planning on being out in the open sun in the heat of the day, take along a “Frog Togg” towel. I personally use these when my son plays baseball. You put them in cold water and leave them damp and I place them in my cooler. You pull them out and place them around your neck or my son places it on his head and places his ball cap over it. These help cool your body down. Also, remember that when traveling everyone, adults and children, can get grumpy, weather from being hungry, lack of activity or just traveling. Keep these thoughts in mind before you act.
Play! Be sure to use your creative side when traveling. Play little games with the kids like “I spy”, “Simon says”, a guessing game, rhyming games, opposite games and hang man. If your child has an academic skill, such as math, spelling or reading, which needs some brushing up on, this is a great time to do it as long as they don’t get car sick from reading, that is. (Can you tell I have one of these?) Technology is cutting edge and our children are born with technology pretty much in their hands as soon as they are born but don’t forget to interact with your children, these will make some memorable times and traditions that carry down generation to generation.
Time to travel! Travel when it’s best for your family! When my kids were toddlers, we had to travel late evening and night because he just could not tolerate traveling, so during the day I would spend it with him playing and tried to avoid a nap. It made for a pleasurable ride for him and us. Now that they are a little older, traveling is easier with games, technology and stops along the way. My youngest likes to know everything so sometimes I map out our travel times, stops and activities. He is now starting to love making his own itinerary!
Last, have all the fun you can have, keep the word “no” out of your vocabulary. Everyone is cutting back, in order to have a little extra money, order water instead of drinks/tea or whatever, order sharing sizes, wait for sales instead of paying full price, coupons! coupons! coupons! shop thrift stores, turn the air conditioner temperature up a few degrees, walk or ride a bike if you can or car pool. All things are possible!
Until next time, have safe and happy travels!
